I Was Told There'd Be Cake...

For anyone that likes dry, self-depreciating humor, read this book.

Sloane Crosley's collection of essays range from tales of pubescent awkwardness to present day moving disasters. I felt as someone had snuck a peek into my life diary & penned it under with fake names & dates. And you will, too- because it's just that good.

Here's a little teaser from one of her essays:

"If I ever have kids, this is what I'm going to do with them: I am going to give birth to them on foreign- preferably the soil of someplace like Oostende or Antwerp- destinations that have the allure of being obscure, freezing, and impossibly cultured. These are places in which people are casually trilingual and everyone knows how to make good coffee and gourmet dinners at home without having to shop for specific ingredients. Everyone has hip European sneakers that effortlessly look like the exact pair you've been searching for your whole life. Everything is sweetened with honey and even the generic-brand Q-tips are aesthetically packaged. All the women are either thin, thin and happy, fat and happy, or thin and miserable in a glamorous way. Somehow none of their Italian heels get caught in the fifteenth-century cobblestone. Ever.

This is where I want to raise my children- until the age of, say, ten, when I'll cruelly rip them out of the stream where they're fly -fishing with their other lederhosened friends and move them to someplace like Lansdale, Pennsylvania. There, they can be not only the cool new kid, but also the Belgian kid. And none of that Toblerone-eating, Tintin reading, tulip growing crap. I want them to be obscurely, freezingly, impossibly Belgian. I want them to be fluent in Flemish and to pronounce "Antwerpen" with a hint of "vh" embedded in the "w."

Why go through all the trouble of giving a ten-year-old an existential heart attack by applying culture shocks like they were nipple clamps? Because, ten-year-olds of the world, you shouldn't believe what your teachers tell you about the beauty and specialness and uniqueness of you. Or, believe it, little snowflake, but know it won't make a bit of difference until after puberty. It's Newton's lost law: anything that makes you unique later will get your chocolate milk stolen and your eye blackened as a kid. Won't it, Sebastian? Oh, yes, it will, my little Mandarin Chinese-learning, Poe-reciting, high-top-wearing friend. God bless you, wherever you are."

The Goods

Last night I went to see Black Kids and Mates of State at the Granada Theater. Naturally it was a good show, and I've been super excited to see Mates of State for a long time. The set list was full of quirky beats and good harmonies. Kudos to the Black Kids too, I was impressed and the dancing was sassy. Highlight? The performance of the closing song "Goods" with members from the band Judgement Day, splashing drum beats in the outro...well played.

It's Patio Time!

The weather is Dallas is officially perfect, at least for me. I love it when its at 80 degree's with some breeze. Last night was my official kick off to patio dining for the spring/summer season. This is most likely my no. 1 reason to be living in Dallas. My friends and I hit up Manny's for an evening of margarita's, chips, and queso. What could be better? Oh I know. Vampire Weekend in my speakers.

(Physically) Fit for a Queen

Working out.. blah. I would so much rather spend my time shopping, driving with my windows down & cranking some good tunes, enjoying breakfast with my friends, or doing absolutely nothing. I just want to hit the gym... in the face.

Typically, I have been bribed by those I love (or sometimes myself) with goals in order to inspire me to break a sweat. I can be wooed by jewelry, money, or... well, that's actually it. However, I realized this weekend that I could be conned into cardio through another means- travel!

My uncle Blair came into town & presented us with a t-shirt for the Cooper River Bridge Run 10k in Charleston as an invitation to join them in the race next year. The 6(ish) miles jaunt starts in the woods of South Carolina, takes you across the giant Cooper River Bridge, and then crosses you into the finish line in historic downtown Charleston. Now THAT gets me excited!

45,000 people ran this race last year. FORTY FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE. Wow. Well, add 2 more to that number for 2010. The Knights will be there! (We just aren't posting our finish times....)

Has anyone ever run this race? Surely someone out of the 45,000 participants loves good decor blogs. I'm dying to hear more!

1st Annual Oak Cliff Art Crawl

I'll be attending the 1st Annual Oak Cliff Art Crawl - Any one want to join me?

Korena Korena

Korena has been a friend of Nest for a while, and we can't tell you how much we love her.

She's an art director at Virtuoso Life Magazine & her style is fabulous0. (I couldn't stop myself.)

Isn't she cute?
Lucky you- you can now hear what she is daily digging on her new blog ... check out her love for great paper & Bell'Invito. (Available at Nest!)

Friends In High Places

If there's one thing that I have learned in life its this: it's never a bad thing to have cool friends.

Heather & I found this vintage chandelier one day when buying some pieces for a client. My heart broke the second I saw it. So after dreaming of it for weeks, I went back to buy it and I was devastated to see that someone else had already taken home MY beloved chandelier. Until one day 3 months later when Heather told me to look on my back porch- there the chandelier sat. It was her housewarming gift to me. I actually cried.

Second life lesson to remember: when industry leaders make suggestions- listen up! So when Beth told me that she liked Sherwin William's Drizzle for my master re-do, I hopped to it & painted it the next day.

Here is the master room when we bought our house:

Here is the master room today (seriously- I took these this morning):

Thanks, Beth & Heather. You might have changed my life. Everyday I wake up & feel so happy when I peek my eyes open. It's the perfect surrounding to start & end my day.

Even Winston loves it.

House & Home Magazine: New at Nest

Thanks to House & Home Magazine for the editorial article about our new Interior Design Service offerings through NEST Interior Design!

Heather's Travel Tip: luxury travel, lusty prices

Ok, ok - I'll reveal one little travel secret. I promised awhile back (to the person who told me about it) that I'd keep this a secret, but the church-girl guilt is overwhelming! If you're a five star kid on a three star budget, listen up! luxurylink.com

There it is. I don't know of a list that is more well-edited or more thorough in travel luxury. I've used this resource for my travel for the past 4 years. Every time, it's been easy and has turned out great boutique hotels with perfect service - something I'm a bit of a stickler for.

A tip: call the property BEFORE you buy the package to be sure the dates you are looking for are available with your room package specifics. Then–go for it. I've paid less than 50% for every package I've purchased. Some places I've hit through luxurylink.com greatness: Rimini, Milan, Florence, Rome, Venice, Paris, San Francisco, New York, Sonoma...to name a few.

The perfect way to end a long day

For whatever reason, this topic has come up more than normal lately, so It seemed blog-worthy.

Q: Where do you love to go for a really great dinner?
A: (It's always the same) I have a short list of favorites: Abacus.

I haven't found too many people my age that frequent Abacus, but if one craves unfailingly great food and exceptional service at the end of a chaotic day, one would be hard-pressed to find much better fare that this Dallas staple. Executive Sous Chef Jermaine Brown prepares the sensational dinners that keep Dallas foodies returning, and the expert staff tirelessly impress an experienced, demanding clientele.

My advice: in these unsettling, penny-pinching times, save on groceries and buy the nine-dollar wine, but don't cut out the night where you're the servee instead of the server - it's definitely worth the splurge!

Reservations can be made by calling 214.539.3111 and I highly suggest you make one. Now. Yummm!

The Secret Garden... Cafe

With the weather getting pleasant on me, it makes me craves some patio dining. What can I say? I'm a Dallas girl through & through. I live for these sunny 8 months of the year. Those cold months make of eating indoors make us pale & chubby. (Yeah, we all love "sweater season" for the same reasons.)

With a nod to my new surroundings of East Dallas, my old friend Grant & I decided to venture to Junius Heights for lunch yesterday. Garden Cafe uses ingredients from their own expansive garden to make their fresh & delicious fare. The food was wonderful, the staff friendly, and the good outdoor weather a necessity for getting the "full experience."

I had the veggie plate (cheese grits are a vegetable, right?) and Grant had Mama's meatloaf. Needless to say, we weren't complaining & we will be returning.
